The CIS secretary general specifically noted the ongoing telephone contact between the presidents of Belarus and Russia, including exchanges of views on current issues and personal meetings. “Other CIS leaders also call each other,” he emphasized. “Following major international meetings, CIS heads of state hold discussions. In particular, I can note with satisfaction that after the signing of the joint declaration between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington, CIS leaders held phone conversations to exchange views on this agreement. We believe this represents one of the steps toward final settlement of differences and achievement of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”
The secretary general noted that the SCO summit will take place in China on 31 August, with the participation of CIS leaders. “Six CIS states are members of the SCO and two states – Azerbaijan and Armenia – are SCO partners. In total, nine CIS member states regularly attend SCO summits. This means that during the SCO summit on 31 August, there will be an opportunity for CIS leaders to share insights,” he emphasized. “Furthermore, CIS leaders are invited to a military parade in Beijing on 3 September marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Contacts between CIS leaders are ongoing and aimed at developing cooperation, promoting peace and security in the CIS region.”
The secretary general added that on 5 September, Tajikistan will host a regular meeting of the CIS Economic Council to be attended by vice premiers responsible for economic matters in the CIS countries.
