Leading national, world media show huge interest in Belarus’ presidential election

MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) - Leading national and world media are showing an unprecedentedly high interest in the presidential election in Belarus, Head of the Information Center of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus, First Deputy Information Minister Andrei Kuntsevich told BelTA.

“The Information Ministry of Belarus has closed applications for journalists’ accreditation at the Information Center of the Central Election Commission, which will be deployed in the Small Hall of the Palace of the Republic on 24-27 January. Judging by the number of applications, we can speak about an unprecedentedly high interest of the leading national and world media to the presidential election in Belarus. About 300 journalists from more than 50 foreign media have expressed their desire to get the opportunity to work at the CEC information center. A total of 490 representatives of 26 Belarusian media outlets have applied for accreditation. All this together is more than twice as many journalists who worked in the Information Center during the previous presidential campaign in Belarus,” Andrei Kuntsevich said.

According to him, for the first time the Information Ministry received a request for access to the CEC Information Center from representatives of regional media and blogosphere. “All the requests received are currently being processed. This process will be completed before 22 January,” the first deputy information minister emphasized.

“On Election Day, the CEC Information Center will become a center of attraction not only for journalists, but also for representatives of the expert community,” Andrei Kuntsevich said. “About 80 leading Belarusian experts in various fields are planning to work on the sidelines of the Information Center. Besides, for the first time the organizers will give an opportunity to BSU journalism students to work at the Information Center as media volunteers to get practical experience.
