MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) – Chairpersons of city and district executive committees are responsible for the development of respective cities and districts. The situation in the entire country largely depends on their work, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova told the ONT TV channel commenting on the strengthening of  powers of local authorities.

Natalya Kochanova emphasized that  chairpersons of city and district executive committees deal with absolutely all issues. The real sector of the economy, industry, agriculture, the social sphere, and the socio-political situation in the region are all within their purview.

“The president of our country always pays special attention to this category of officials. Firstly, this is a personnel reserve. Undoubtedly, people who have worked in local governments understand how things work first-hand. They know how to implement laws and decrees and how to assess the efficiency of their implementation. Aleksandr Grigorievich said that everything should be spelled out clearly, that there should be no obstacles in the work of chairpersons of district and city executive committees. Their hands should not be tied. They should have enough rights and powers to implement the tasks facing them,” the chairwoman of the Council of the Republic noted.

Natalya Kochanova described chairpersons of city and district executive committees as linchpins. “That said, we understand that these people have a special responsibility. After all, they are responsible for the development of a respective city, district. This work also has a profound impact on the situation in our country as a whole. I would like to repeat that in the future these people can and should work in central and regional government bodies,” the speaker added.
