Kochanova: Belarus taking tangible measures to enhance women's role

MINSK, 29 April (BelTA) - Belarus is taking tangible measures to enhance the role of women in the country's development, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova said at a web-based seminar of women MPs of Belarus and China on 29 April, BelTA has learned.

"Belarus is taking tangible measures to improve the situation of Belarusian women, to increase their role in the development of the country," Natalya Kochanova said. "Our president has always supported women and the women's movement."

The speaker recalled that in accordance with the Constitution of Belarus, women and men are provided with equal opportunities in education and vocational training, in work and promotion, in socio-political, cultural and other areas of life. "In order to preserve the traditional family values of Belarusian society, following the national discussion and the referendum, the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus has incorporated the provision that marriage is the union of a woman and a man," she said. “Since 1996, Belarus has been implementing the five-year national plans of action to ensure gender equality. Currently, the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Republic of Belarus for the period up to 2035 is in progress. Thanks to these policy documents, we have ensured absolute equality between men and women in Belarus."

"We are ready to share our national practices and positive legislative experience with women MPs of China. I am sure that today, during the seminar in the spirit of constructive dialogue, we will discuss ways to create favorable conditions and provide incentives for the active participation of women in the political, economic and social life of our countries," Natalya Kochanova added.

The agenda of the seminar includes topical issues: the role of women MPs in public administration and the promotion of economic and social development, the protection of the rights and interests of women, the strengthening of international cooperation, the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
