KGB chief: Belarus could help find a consensus to resolve Ukraine conflict

MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) – Belarus could help find a consensus in order to settle the conflict in Ukraine, Belarusian KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel told journalists following the meeting with the head of state to discuss the global situation and relations with the United States, BelTA reports.

“We are pursuing a certain agenda on Ukraine,” the KGB chief stated. “In this regard, I would like to say that the situation in Ukraine is developing along an escalatory spiral. Contrary to our expectations, we do not yet see that the efforts being undertaken have led to an end to the conflict.”
He emphasized that Belarus and the president personally are deeply immersed in this situation, and for Aleksandr Lukashenko, this is a nearly personal matter.

“We know the Ukrainians, we know the Russians. Our president communicates with them and understands the reality of the situation,” noted Ivan Tertel. “The position of the Republic of Belarus and our president is that we can make our contribution. We are those who understand both the Russian and Ukrainian sides, and we could help find a consensus in this extremely difficult situation. At least, no other viable options are currently in sight. In this regard, our active dialogue with the American side, our allied relations with the Russian Federation, and our very close ties with Ukraine allow us to assert that we should nevertheless try to resolve this problem, leveraging our understanding of the situation,” he added.
