Karanik: Scientists’ task is to develop AI, minimize risks

MINSK, 25 August (BelTA) – The task of scientists is to ensure that dreams in the field of AI development come true, while risks do not, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Karanik said during a foresight session in Minsk on 25 August, BelTA has learned.
“Attitudes towards artificial intelligence have changed over time. Initially, there were dreams that it would do all the work on behalf of humans. Then came horror stories that it would destroy humanity. Now it has become a reality. It has firmly entered our lives. And the task of scientists and all developers is to ensure that the dreams come true, and the risks do not. Here, the scope of application is indeed very broad. Starting from what we see every day – smart speakers, voice assistants in mobile communication devices – to more specific implementation in production. For example, machine vision that automates processes and improves the quality of manufactured products. These are also support and decision-making systems in healthcare and administrative management. This is already a reality that has a significant impact on people's lives and the economy,” Vladimir Karanik said.

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has prepared a model law on AI technologies to serve as a foundation for similar legislation across CIS states. “Today’s foresight session has gathered specialists who determine how AI will develop in our countries, what we can offer each other, and how to ensure that this development is safe and aimed at the benefit of humanity and the development of the economy of our country,” the chairman of the NASB Presidium noted. According to him, work on AI development is underway in all countries. “If we want to be competitive and not depend on service providers from other countries, we must develop our own technologies,” Vladimir Karanik emphasized.

Belarusian Communications and Informatization Minister Kirill Zalessky noted that it is relevant to discuss where artificial intelligence should be applied to accelerate processes in all spheres of public relations. “I believe that the foresight session with Russian colleagues will help identify the areas where we can implement AI systems with the greatest efficiency. The demand is high. This includes the integration of AI into existing information systems in the country, and its application in their development,” he pointed out.

At the foresight session within the international foresight on artificial intelligence in Belarus, experts will discuss trends in AI technology development and its implementation in education, industry, and healthcare, computer vision and highly specialized systems, social consequences and security challenges, regulation and international cooperation, key trends and prospects for domestic R&D products.
