MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) –  The Belarus 1 TV channel showed footage of the detention of a Japanese spy in Belarus in a program titled “The Failure of a Samurai from Tokyo,” BelTA has learned.

The activities of Japanese special services have been revealed and stopped in Belarus. Messages and reports were sent from Gomel to Tokyo under the pseudonym Masa.

A Japanese citizen and lawyer Masatoshi Nakanishi was detained by the KGB before leaving Belarus. The materials stored in the Japanese man's laptop would have been very welcomed by a special service that he intended to visit upon arrival in Tokyo. This service is called Kokka Kōan Iinkai, or the National Public Safety Commission of Japan. This structure runs the country's National Police Agency. One of the agency’s divisions is the Security Bureau that is engaged in counterintelligence and intelligence activities. Its Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Department specializes in international relations, technical investigations. It has a unit known as YAMA, which has access to classified information based on intercepts from various communications facilities

It is possible that Masatoshi Nakanishi would first meet with Masanari Sato - the ex-husband of his younger sister, and an agent handler. The Japanese admitted that he is afraid of this man. “Because he has connections in the special services,” he said.

Masatoshi Nakanishi has a higher legal education, although he portrayed himself as an entrepreneur. In fact, the company BelNihonInternational that he launched in Belarus existed only on paper. For six years it did not report any profits or transactions, rather losses and fines. Fines and taxes were regularly paid. At the same time, the company was not engaged in any activity, unlike Masatoshi Nakanishi.

“The photos I took near the Ukrainian border, near bridges and a railway, could have been used by the USA or Ukraine for a possible attack. I think they could have launched a missile strike on Belarus. The USA and Japan maintain close ties. I did the wrong thing. I regret it,” the Japanese spy said.
