Iranian ambassador comments on role of book fairs in enhancing prosperity of society

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) - By holding book fairs the state demonstrates its deep understanding of the importance of reading, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Belarus Alireza Sanei said at the opening of the 21st Minsk International Book Fair, BelTA has learned.

"Undoubtedly, the willingness of states, including the Republic of Belarus, to hold book exhibitions, to preserve books and popularize reading and to celebrate and encourage writers, scientists and cultural figures testify that the state has a correct and deep understanding of the significant role of books and reading, writers, scientists and publishers and their impact on the development and prosperity of human society," Ambassador Alireza Sanei said.

On the other hand, he noted, this mission is the responsibility of states as a time when the development of science and technology, when the humanity is transiting to digital life, have led to a decrease in the general interest, especially of the younger generation, in books and reading.

"The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Minsk, understanding the importance of book reading, wishing to support Belarus’ efforts to spread the culture of reading, and also to strengthen cultural ties between the two countries, has made significant efforts to ensure that Iran's presence at this exhibition is as vivid and memorable as possible compared to previous years," the ambassador said.

According to him, more than 300 works of Iranian writers in the Russian language are on show in Minsk. Two prominent Iranian writers-researchers will present their books to the book fair visitors and researchers.
