Interparliamentary cooperation with Oman described as very important for Belarus

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova met with Chairman of the Sultanate of Oman Shura Council Khalid Bin Hilal Al Maawali on the margins of the plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Baku, BelTA learned.

"A short while ago, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko visited the Sultanate of Oman. Upon his return he spoke a lot about your beautiful country and our further cooperation. We hope that the Sultan of Oman will accept the invitation of our president to come to our country on an official visit," Natalya Kochanova stated. "We also invite our colleagues- parliamentarians to visit Belarus. We will be happy to welcome you in our country. This would give an impetus to the interparliamentary cooperation. Belarus’ Parliament has a friendship group, which seeks closer cooperation with the Sultanate of Oman. Certainly, the parliamentary dimension is very important for us," she said.

The speaker pointed out that the interparliamentary cooperation involve not only joint legislative activities. "It is primarily about mutual support and joint work in international organizations. I am very happy that we will interact with you in one more organization, in the Asian Parliamentary Assembly," she added. "Today our colleagues have risen a number of serious issues concerning the world's challenges and threats. People cannot be happy while there are wars on the planet, while people die. It is a disaster.  Parliamentary organizations such as the APA should strongly support peace, harmony, and the opportunity for every sovereign state to develop independently and live according to their own laws and traditions."

Social and economic development and economy are essential for every country, Natalya Kochanova emphasized. "This is what determines the development of every country. We are committed to developing very close and beneficial cooperation with the Sultanate of Oman in different areas, including agriculture, manufacturing, woodworking and pharmaceuticals industries, as well as humanitarian cooperation,” she stated. "The Belarusian government focuses on economic development of the country. We have established quite a lot of intergovernmental commissions that are responsible for cooperation with this or that country. We hope that the establishment of an intergovernmental commission between Belarus and Oman will be very effective in terms of promoting economic cooperation."

Natalya Kochanova believes that today's meeting will give a new impetus to Belarus-Oman cooperation and allow implementing the agreements reached between the leaders of Belarus and Oman.

"Belarus is committed to peace-loving initiatives. This year we will celebrate a great holiday: the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. Our foreign policy aims only at peace and harmony between the countries," Natalya Kochanova added.

The parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Belarus led by Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova arrived in Azerbaijan on an official visit. The program of the visit includes participation in a session of the Executive Council of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly and the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.
