IAEA chief shares details of his meeting with Lukashenko

MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) – We discussed a number of very important issues in an open and trusting atmosphere, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told the media after a meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk on 1 October, BelTA learned. 

"First of all, we discussed the delicate situation in the region, the conflict in Ukraine, the challenges and dangers of the situation in the region," Rafael Grossi said. "I informed the president in detail about the work the IAEA has been doing since the beginning of the conflict to ensure the safety and security of the nuclear power plants in Ukraine."

According to the IAEA head, it was very important for him to hear the personal position of the Belarusian president, his approaches to ensuring nuclear security and peace in the region. "He shared the approaches with me in a very clear, open manner," Rafael Grossi said. 

The IAEA chief plans to visit the Belarusian NPP to make sure of the safe operation of the power units. "We understand how important the construction of this nuclear power plant was for the Belarusian economy. We are very pleased that our agency was directly involved in its construction, ensuring the safety of this facility," he added.

As BelTA has reported, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko reaffirmed Belarus’ commitment to cooperation with the IAEA during the meeting with Rafael Grossi.

“You should know that we are committed to security and  peace and we will do our utmost to ensure regional nuclear safety and security.,” the head of state said.
