How Lukashenko and his son were received in Vatican in 2016

MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us aired by the Belarus 1 TV channel detailed the meeting between Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican in 2016, BelTA has learned.

Belarus maintained dialogue about peace and development in the region with the Vatican too. In 2016, Aleksandr Lukashenko held a one-to-one meeting with Pope Francis. The Vatican appreciates the peace-loving policy of Belarus. The Pontiff presented Aleksandr Lukashenko with three documents written by him and an olive tree image as a symbol of peace.

"Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko was very warmly welcomed by the Pope. They had a long meeting. It went beyond the time limits established by the protocol. Certainly, we hoped that this meeting would give a new impetus to the improvement of the relations between the West and our country. In 2016, the talks, including those with the Pope, focused on the issue of ensuring stability and security in Europe," said Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of Belarus.

Senior advisor to the Belarusian Embassy in Italy (2014-2018), spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz stressed that the president visited the Vatican with his son Nikolai. "A lot of ill-wishers made some insinuations about it. As someone who was there, I can say that the Pope welcomed the presence of the president's youngest son, they had a conversation. Then at the level of protocol services, we were informed that the Pope was very happy to see that the president did not come alone thus showing the continuity of generations," Anatoly Glaz emphasized.
