"On Point"
MINSK, 7 April (BelTA) - The settlement of the pan-European conflict is only in word, with no real progress currently made, historian Yevgeny Spitsyn said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel as he commented on whether May 2025 could be similar, even slightly, to May 1945.
“In history, any parallels and analogies are rather conditional. As Marx once said, quoting Hegel, history repeats itself twice: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce. This beautiful formula, of course, does not reflect the entirety of the historical process in all its multidimensionality, as we tend to say. If some agreements on the Ukrainian conflict are reached, which I doubt very much, then, quite possibly, some parallels will be possible to draw,” Yevgeny Spitsyn said.
The historian added that in the case of some agreements on Ukraine, many would like to “fit” the signing of certain agreements to 9 May, in order to have another Victory Day. “These are, of course, good wishes, but in my opinion, they are still unrealistic. The process of settling the Ukrainian conflict (I would even say, the pan-European conflict) only comes in word. In my opinion, no real progress is being made,” he emphasized.
According to Yevgeny Spitsyn stated that currently the parties are making some statements, conducting explicit or secret negotiations, marking their positions. “The fact is, however, that all the players have completely different goals and objectives. So far there have been no real agreements on these issues,” the historian emphasized.
