Gryguć compares level of trust in media in Belarus, Poland

MINSK, 18 July (BelTA) – Belarusian media are characterized by a high level of personal and journalistic standards and journalistic skill, which has disappeared or is disappearing in the West, Polish political scientist and publicist Tomasz Gryguć said in an interview with BelTA.

“The level of trust in the media in Poland and Belarus is, of course, different. In Poland, we understand perfectly well that these so-called mainstream media, private and state-owned, are not run by Polish interests. They are run primarily by mercenaries, not by journalists,” Tomasz Gryguć said adding that the Polish media are ruled by German or American interests.

He emphasized that the difference between Polish and Belarusian state media is obvious. “What do we appreciate in the Belarusian media? In the cases of Covid and Ukraine, Poles have turned to Russian and Belarusian media in the first place, despite the fact that access is blocked to them. The access to the Belarusian and Russian media was immediately blocked by the U.S. system. Especially after the start of the special military operation to denazify Ukraine,” Tomasz Gryguć pointed out.

“The difference between Polish and Belarusian or Russian media is fundamental and obvious. Takes Belarusian journalists, Russian journalists or BelTA as an example. BelTA is the best example. You are pro-state, you are on the side of your people. You care, you observe, you know and understand what the interests of the Belarusian state, the Belarusian nation are. You know that the mass media are a very important element in the game of war, not only the information war, but the war between the antagonists. The United States makes a cynical use of YouTube, Facebook, X and their media, television and newspapers to destroy opponents, to discredit them, to distort reality, according to its interests. They have enormous opportunities for this,” Tomasz Gryguć shared his observations.

“We appreciate the Belarusian media for their professionalism, their intellectual openness. We are talking about a high level of personal standards, a high level of journalistic standards, journalistic skill, which has disappeared or is disappearing in a sharp and dramatic way in the West. This good old school of journalism, like the good old school of diplomacy, can be found in the East, in Belarus and the Russian Federation. For this you have the greatest respect. It is good that there is such a thing as BelTA, it is good that Poles can use such media outlets as ONT, STV channels,” Tomasz Gryguć expressed his opinion.

Discussing the sociological survey, which indicated an increase in the degree of trust of the Belarusian audience in the state media [38.4% in 2021 and 54.3% in 2023], the Polish publicist noted that the Belarusian media are in demand as a source of unbiased information in Poland as well. “We are closely watching everything here in Warsaw. Thanks to you we know what Minsk says, thanks to you we know what Moscow or Beijing says. This is a very good source of information. You can be proud of yourselves, because you - the Belarusian media - create this space of freedom, a space in which you can choose and think for yourself. But it is extremely important that the Belarusian media continue to broadcast and be what they are, i.e. independent media that know what the interests of the Belarusian people and the Belarusian state are,” Tomasz Gryguć said.
