MINSK, 7 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Latvia have some potential for cooperation in food industry and woodworking industry. Deputy Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Marianna Shchetkina made the statement as she met with Latvian Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs in Riga on 7 June, the press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament told BelTA.
During the meeting the sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in food industry and woodworking industry. Marianna Shchetkina noted that taking into account Latvia's potential and standing in these areas cooperation with Latvian private companies in the sphere of industrial manufacturing, innovations, new technologies, and the promotion of Belarusian products to the European Union market looks interesting for Belarus.
Marianna Shchetkina also met with heads and members of the Lithuanian parliament's commissions on foreign and European affairs, social and labor affairs. Prospects of cooperation within the framework of international and regional organizations were discussed.
Apart from that, Marianna Shchetkina met with Aiva Viksna, Deputy President of the Employers' Confederation of Latvia, Chairwoman of the women entrepreneurs society Lidere, and representatives of Latvian logistics and IT companies. An agreement was reached on signing an agreement between the Belarusian Union of Women and the Lidere society with a view to establishing mutually beneficial cooperation, hosting joint events, and implementing projects to develop small business.
A delegation of the Belarusian parliament is in Latvia on a visit on 6-8 June. Members of the delegation have already met with Deputy Speaker of the Latvian parliament Gundars Daudze, the head and members of the Latvian parliament's group on cooperation with the Belarusian parliament, Parliamentary Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica, Latvian Transport Minister Uldis Augulis. The delegation of the Belarusian parliament visited the Riga-based Yanka Kupala secondary school, which is Latvia's only educational institution where the Belarusian language and the Belarusian literature are taught. Textbooks and fiction books in Belarusian were gifted to the school.
