MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko has introduced the newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko to the staff of the Council of Ministers, BelTA has learned.

“We are glad to welcome you to our team. Your area of responsibility is very important. It includes primarily the agricultural industry, science and technology, innovations, mining industry, environment and environmental protection, and natural resources. You will also be responsible for interacting with such major national associations as Belkoopsoyuz and the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen. Therefore, your scope of work is very big and diverse. You are not a newcomer, you have a brilliant career, you have worked in many areas, both in public administration, and in the manufacturing sector. You went up the career ladder from a foreman to the head of the regional association Grodnomyasomolprom; you have worked in various roles in the government, including as the Grodno Oblast deputy governor and quite efficiently as the Brest Oblast governor,” said Roman Golovchenko.

He wished Yuri Shuleiko many successes in his new role as deputy prime minister. “You know firsthand that the agricultural industry is facing very serious challenges now. There are many achievements, but there are also many problems. The president has set a task to secure significant growth in the agricultural industry, including in added value and exports. We must achieve at least $9 billion in exports. It is necessary to look for and bring in new technologies to the country, develop new types of products,” the prime minister emphasized.

Speaking with journalists, Yuri Shuleiko noted that the agricultural sector is one of the mainstays of the Belarusian economy. The country has adopted programs to support this sector, which is a testimony that it is one of the country’s priorities. In his new position, the deputy prime minister will pay special attention to agriculture, processing of agricultural products and export, yet other areas will not be overlooked, either.

Yuri Shuleiko added that he will continue to oversee Brest Oblast to some extent, especially until the appointment of a new governor.
