ISLAMABAD, 16 October (BelTA) – During the meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council in Islamabad, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko named the things that Belarus views as priorities for the SCO, BelTA has learned.
“By abusing their leading positions in many spheres of economy and finance, Western countries are imposing unlawful unilateral restrictions, hindering the development of states they don't like. Today, a third of the SCO countries are under crippling sanctions. In line with the instructions given by the heads of state at the Astana summit, we suggest stepping up efforts to set up a development bank and a development fund in the SCO in order to finance various joint projects in the field of sustainable development,” said Roman Golovchenko.
The second aspect is the convergence of various integration associations in the Eurasian space. “Global turbulence and the crisis of monetary and trade settlements systems, a dramatic shift in the balance of power in the international economic system are increasingly pushing us to align integration formats to promote sustainable development. Belarus favors the creation of a large Eurasian partnership, the conjugation of the EAEU and the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the EAEU, the CIS, the CSTO and the SCO in the broadest context,” the prime minister noted.
Belarus would like to join the efforts to develop the common SCO transport and logistics space, including by stimulating international road, rail, sea, multimodal transportation, accelerating and digitalizing control procedures, building and developing the North-South transport corridor.
“We suggest honing in on the topic of transport interconnectivity, developing new logistics schemes, and building effective transport corridors on the SCO platform. Removing unnecessary barriers to transportation is more relevant today than ever,” the Belarusian head of government noted.
In addition, in order to intensify trade, Belarus proposes creating an SCO inter-exchange union. It will help align approaches to exchange trading and facilitate the development of national systems of price indicators.
“This will allow us to stabilize prices in the SCO countries to a certain extent, boost mutual exchange trade and ensure fair pricing for goods and services. If our partners support us, we are ready to initiate such a mechanism,” Roman Golovchenko suggested.
Another proposal provides for intensifying the exchange of experience in scientific research, technology and innovation with the subsequent implementation of advanced practices and solutions. Belarus intends to join all existing mechanisms in this field.
The Belarusian prime minister suggested deepening and strengthening humanitarian ties. According to Roman Golovchenko, this will help unite the Shanghai family. He recalled that the Day of Cultures of the SCO Member States was held during this year’s international arts festival Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk; it was timed to Belarus’ accession to the organization.
“We plan to continue working on cultural convergence. With a view to promoting cooperation in sports, we invite athletes from the SCO states to participate in competitions held in our country. We are ready to offer our sports facilities for SCO athletes to get ready for international competitions,” the prime minister added.
