MINSK, 28 May (BelTA) – The anniversary of Belarusian State University (BSU) is a great opportunity to take stock of many years of the university's work and to introduce the young generation to its rich traditions, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO Vladimir Makei said at a solemn event timed to the centennial anniversary of BSU on 28 May, BelTA has learned.
“The centenary of Belarusian State University is not only an important milestone, but also an excellent opportunity to review many years of work of the university, strengthen its positions in the international academic and scientific community, and introduce the young generation to the university's rich traditions. The university is known not only for its long-standing history, but also for its accomplishments. From its very first days, the university has spearheaded progress and creativity, has become a well-acclaimed educational and research hub, and has established itself as a higher learning institution that plays an important role in the development of Belarusian society,” the foreign minister said.
Vladimir Makei noted that BSU is one of Belarus' leading universities. This is an advanced educational and research center that has the necessary capabilities to handle the tasks set by the state, society and individuals. It boasts a wide range of majors, highly qualified staff, well-developed research infrastructure and modern educational solutions.
“The inclusion of the centennial anniversary of BSU in the list of UNESCO commemorative dates is a testimony to the high international standing of the university, its great achievements in the educational and academic fields. The international activities of the university deserve the highest praise and this is due to the teaching staff. BSU is continuously working to build international contacts, it maintains close cooperation with leading foreign educational institutions and research centers, implements numerous international projects. Two UNESCO chairs are successfully functioning at the university,” the foreign minister added.
According to him, in the time of crises, instability and changes, personnel training becomes all important and reaches a qualitatively new level. “Today we need knowledgeable, flexible and quick-witted professionals. According to the UN, Belarus ranks 53rd on global human development index, while the literacy rate in the country is almost 100%. Not all countries can boast this. BSU has contributed greatly to this result, as it trains highly qualified specialists in various fields. The university graduates are the intellectual elite of our country. The university gave a start in life to many famous statesmen and public figures who have achieved great recognition both in Belarus and abroad,” the foreign minister said.
The university has become an alma mater for many Belarusian diplomats. BSU graduates make up the core of the Belarusian diplomatic service. The minister believes that the university will keep working to create the country's intellectual assets.
On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Commission for UNESCO, Vladimir Makei wished the staff and students of the university many successes, new achievements and victories for the benefit of the state. The foreign minister expressed hope that all subsequent generations of students will cherish and strengthen the wonderful traditions of the university and contribute to the sustainable development of Belarus.
The event was attended by First Deputy Education Minister Irina Starovoitova, the administration and staff of BSU, employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
