FM comments on Belarus-Vietnam cooperation

GOMEL, 16 May (BelTA) - Belarus and Vietnam enjoy long-standing cooperation, hold similar views on international issues and have similar socially oriented policy, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov told the media after his meeting with the activists of Gomel on 16 May, BelTA has learned.

The key topic of the meeting was Belarus' foreign policy and its partnership development with various countries.

"We identify strategic points of interest in different regions of the world to focus our efforts and establish hubs to promote economic and financial interests and build up political relations," Maksim Ryzhenkov stated. One such key partner of Belarus in the Asia-Pacific region is Vietnam.

"Our cooperation is built on the long-standing interaction between the Soviet and Vietnamese peoples. Many Belarusians helped Vietnam defend its independence during wartime and contributed to its post-war reconstruction. During the Soviet era, Belarus and Vietnam enjoyed strong relations across all sectors: from culture to economy. What we are doing today is a continuation and intensification of those ties," the minister emphasized.

Among the key factors connecting the two countries he highlighted similar views on international issues. "Our domestic policy is socially oriented aimed at improving the well-being of our peoples. Another key element of our policy is the implementation of human rights. All these unite us with Vietnam and allow building trade and economic cooperation based on common principles," the minister noted.

"And, of course, the friendly relationship between our countries’ leaders, President Aleksandr Lukashenko and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam, creates additional opportunities for expanding cooperation," Maksim Ryzhenkov added.
He recalled that during To Lam’s recent visit to Belarus, several new areas of cooperation were outlined. "This includes assembling Belarusian machinery in Vietnam, supplying Belarusian products and producing food items from our goods for further distribution not only in the Vietnamese market but also in other countries. Let me remind you that the Asia-Pacific region, where we plan to expand our relations with Vietnam, has a population of approximately 700 million people," the minister concluded.

The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs met with citizens and activists of Gomel on 16 May. The program of the minister’s visit also included the familiarization with the manufacturing sector and discussion of Milkavita’s export operations.
