Five people who received Hero of Belarus title in 2006

MINSK, 23 December (BelTA) – The film Time Chose Us on the Belarus 1 TV channel told viewers about the five people who were awarded the Hero of Belarus title in 2006, BelTA reports.

The Hero of Belarus title is the highest degree of distinction in the country. Neither before nor after 2006 were so many people awarded this title at the same time. The next time this title was presented was in 2014 when famous biathlete Darya Domracheva received it.

In 2006, the recipients included Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, Chairman of the Board of the National Bank Piotr Prokopovich, Director General of the Scientific and Engineering Enterprise Belavtotraktorostroenie of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Mikhail Vysotsky, Head of Creative Academic Workshops, People's Artist of the Soviet Union Mikhail Savitsky, and Chairman of the Progress-Vertelishki agricultural company Vasily Revyako. They all received the award from the hands of the president in the Palace of the Republic.

Metropolitan Filaret revived the spiritual life of Belarus. He built a metropolitanate from one diocese. Thanks to the Exarch, church bells began to ring again in cities and villages. The Metropolitan inaugurated churches and revived monasteries and convents. Moreover, he also helped Catholics in opening churches. Belarus became the first country in the post-Soviet space where a seminary was opened for the first time in many decades.

“On behalf of the new group of Heroes of the Republic of Belarus, I express my sincere gratitude and declare commitment to work harder in the interests of the Republic of Belarus and its people,” Metropolitan Filaret said at the award ceremony.

Mikhail Vysotsky noted that it was a great responsibility for him to receive the Hero of Belarus star. He remarked that much still remains to be done.

Piotr Prokopovich said that he perceived the Hero of Belarus title as recognition of the efforts of the entire banking system. And Vasily Revyako emphasized that Progress-Vertelishki is the pride of Grodno Oblast.

Mikhail Savitsky needs no introduction. A front-line soldier, a participant in the battles for Sevastopol, he went through three concentration camps, including Buchenwald and Dachau. His works have left an indelible mark in the cultural life of our country.
