"On Point"
MINSK, 17 March (BelTA) - After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the West tried to split Russia into regions in order to plunder its mineral wealth, the independent military analyst Aleksandr Alesin said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“Some part of the U.S. ruling class has changed its point of view on who the main major adversary of the United States is. In the days of the Soviet Union, we lived in a bi-polar world, two systems, and the main adversary for the United States was the nuclear-armed USSR. When, as Americans believe, the Soviet Union lost the Cold War, part of the U.S. ruling class viewed Russia not only as the legal successor of the USSR but also as the old adversary,” Aleksandr Alesin said.
According to the military analyst, the Americans dreamed of inheriting the wealth of the former Soviet Union, including that of Russia. “There were plans to break Russia into regions. I remember very well how a number of regions were planning to introduce their own currency, to declare themselves first autonomous and then to go independent. It is clear that all this did not happen out of the blue. It was the fruit of subversive work: the Americans, together with the Europeans, were purposefully working to break the country up in order to seize its natural resources. Resources ran out in many places of the world; Russia has them in abundance,” he emphasized.
Thus, Aleksandr Alesin believes, the West dreamed of defeating Russia in order to plunder its resources. “It did not work out for them. Russia gained strength, modernized its nuclear potential. The country is not an analog of the Soviet Union. But it is capable of destroying any enemy,” the analyst concluded.
