MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) - The reluctance of Kiev and the European Union to end the conflict in Ukraine is starting to frustrate U.S. President Donald Trump, who is seeking to resolve it, Ukrainian public figure Dmitry Vasilets said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The next step to resolve the conflict was the phone call between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. "They have already discussed how the process will proceed. Apparently, the Zelensky regime and the figures behind him intend to maintain a confrontational stance. The Zelensky regime has already declared that NATO membership is its ultimate goal, which is both a stumbling block and a reason for prolonging the conflict. If this position persists, hostilities will continue," Dmitry Vasilets concluded.
According to the Ukrainian activist, U.S. President Donald Trump is currently trying to persuade a coalition of the UK, France, Germany and Poland to push for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. "It is clear that the United States is attempting to distance itself. Meanwhile, Britain and EU, on the contrary, are trying to escalate it as they pursue their own gains. Trump ordered Zelensky to fly to Istanbul, even though Zelensky and his patrons initially refused negotiations," Dmitry Vasilets said.
He noted that Donald Trump himself made it clear that no concrete results should be expected from the Istanbul talks. The U.S. leader believes the key negotiations will take place between Washington and Moscow. "The logical conclusion is that this is essentially a disciplining move against the coalition led by Macron and Zelensky. These figures, it seems, have overstepped their bounds and Trump’s team is growing increasingly frustrated with them," he emphasized.
