Expert shares his thoughts on what Trump really wants

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - There is room for compromise in the negotiation process between Russia and the USA, Igor Shishkin, an expert of the Institute of CIS Countries, said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Trump announced his readiness for a meeting in Budapest, and then there was the conversation between Lavrov and Rubio. Lavrov said that we are ready for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, provided the root cause of this conflict is eliminated and Russia's security is ensured. These points were the main ones. After that, the other side states that they have nothing to talk about now. Are there any questions left? It is obvious that Trump is trying, through a peacemaking process, to inflict the same strategic defeat on Russia as Biden did. The methods are different, but the goal is the same,” Igor Shishkin said.

According to the expert from the Institute of CIS Countries, this does not mean that negotiations should not be conducted with the U.S. president. “Because Russia is interested in a peaceful resolution of the conflict, not a military one. And maybe something will come of it. In any case, it is pointless to conduct such negotiations with the Europeans; they are cornered and will not agree to it. But with Trump, it is possible in principle to reach a deal, because for him, abandoning the strategic defeat of the Russian Federation is a defeat for the USA, but not a strategic, not a fatal one for the USA, unlike for the European Union,” said Igor Shishkin. “He can agree to it and even gain certain benefits that would fully compensate for the damage the USA will suffer from having unleashed a hybrid war. Trump is now acting in the role of a supposed mediator, but it was the USA that unleashed the hybrid war against Russia.”

“There is room for discussion and compromise. It is precisely on this field that an intense diplomatic struggle is now being waged,” the expert from the Institute of CIS Countries said.
