Expert: Manipulating the results of elections, referendums became regular practice for the West

MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) - Manipulating the results of elections and referendums has become a regular practice for the West, Andrei Belyakov, head of the Center for Public Relations and Electoral Process of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Belarus, member of the Scientific and Expert Council at the Central Election Commission of Belarus said in the latest episode of BelTA’s project "The Nation Speaks".
"Regarding the  organization of polling stations abroad, I would like to draw your attention to the recent election in Moldova. We remember that the citizens of Moldova chose one course. But at night the 'democracy mode' was switched on and in the morning the citizens found out that they elected another president and chose another course that absolutely did not coincide with their views. Such cases are becoming more and more common. In other words, manipulating the results of both elections and referendums has become a regular practice," Andrei Belyakov said.

According to him, nowadays over 60 countries in the world have refused to set up polling stations abroad. "As this directly affects electoral sovereignty, among other things. States are realizing that elections should be held for the citizens who live in the country. If people want to vote, they should come to their country. But some people want to promote some other values of the countries they reside in... Belarusians are able to decide themselves who their next leader will be, and this approach is also seen in many other countries," he stated. "Take a look at how the elections were held in Romania and Georgia. There is a trend towards sovereignty and independence around the world nowadays. We keep step with those countries that prioritize independence and national sovereignty.”
