MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) – The position of Lithuania on nuclear safety raises many concerns, Master of Political Science Viktor Sayevich, an economist, professor of the Belarusian State Economic University, told the media, BelTA has learned.
Belarus is concerned about the actions of neighboring Lithuania. The country denied access for Belarusian specialists to the Ignalina NPP to monitor the situation and also announced its plans to build a nuclear dump.
"They criticized our nuclear power plant, but it is absolutely safe. The IAEA head Rafael Grossi confirmed that BelNPP meets all international standards. We are an example of nuclear safety. The president has always prioritized this matter," Viktor Sayevich said. "Belarus has invited numerous international experts for an unbiased assessment of the situation."
The expert wondered whether Lithuania pays the same attention to nuclear and radiation safety, especially given its unwillingness to cooperate with Belarus on this issue. "The Lithuanian government has always been dependent on the EU and does what’s told. We see the situation in Lithuania: the country is losing its young people and is turning into a dump," he stated.
