Expert: IAEA’s report on BelNPP is fully consistent with reality

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) - The report of Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi regarding the Belarusian nuclear power plant he visited on 1 October is quite positive and supportive of the plant's operation, Russian political scientist and expert in nuclear energy Alexey Anpilogov said in an interview to the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

Speaking about the results of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's visit to Belarus, to BelNPP and his report on the plant's operation, the expert said: “There is an objective reality around which documents, including the IAEA’s ones, have to be built. It cannot say that black is white or white is black. The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a Generation 3+ plant. It is actually the first plant with VVER-1200 reactors belonging to this generation which was built outside the Russian Federation.”

“Taking into account that the Belarusian nuclear power plant has proved well-performing and efficient, i.e. without any significant incidents related to operation, stably generates electricity, meets all safety requirements, which is extremely important for the IAEA. What else could be said about a good and technologically advanced plant? Accordingly, the IAEA has drawn up a report that is quite positive and supportive of the operation of this plant,” Alexey Anpilogov said.

“The fact that the neighbors are still complaining about its safety or even the presence of the Belarusian nuclear power plant on the territory of sovereign Belarus is their problem. There are internationally recognized institutions, including the IAEA, which is a United Nations agency with appropriate authority from the UN Security Council. In this regard, I will rely on the IAEA report, which is fully consistent with reality,” he added.
