MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – When designing the Oreshnik missile, the engineers tapped into existing missile systems and complexes, Russian military observer of the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, retired colonel Viktor Baranets said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Once we had an agreement with the Americans on intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. What does that mean? Such missiles can fly from 1,000 km to 5,500 km. After the Americans withdrew from this agreement, we found ourselves in a situation when the enemy was developing such missiles, while we were just watching them. Therefore, it was decided to start working on certain systems. We had very extensive experience with missiles of this system,” said Viktor Baranets.
The military observer noted that developing certain weapons systems from scratch can be expensive. Therefore, when creating the Oreshnik missile, the designers relied on existing solutions, among other things. “We decided to make a kind of model construction kit. We took something from the Pioneer [the RSD-10 Pioneer Soviet missile system], something from the RS-26, something from the Topol, something from the Yars. And we came up with an amazing missile,” said Viktor Baranets.
