"On Point"
MINSK, 5 January (BelTA) - The U.S. attack on Venezuela is also a blow to an organization like OPEC, which was created to control oil production quotas, national security expert Aleksandr Tishchenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert commented on the situation regarding Venezuela and the country’s President Nicolas Maduro, who was kidnapped by the USA. According to Aleksandr Tishchenko, energy resources played a significant role in this. “Venezuela has heavy oil, and all U.S. refineries in this region are set up specifically for heavy oil. In this regard, the USA also has an interest. The Americans have stated that Venezuela’s subsoil resources are the USA’s property,” he said.
Aleksandr Tishchenko noted that the U.S. attack on Venezuela is also a blow to certain international organizations. “We need to look broader and on a larger scale. This is also a blow to OPEC. The point is that OPEC will apparently be pushed out. The entire global oil industry will again be reduced to the topic of the ‘seven sisters’ [referring to the seven largest companies that dominated global oil trade in the last century]. Today, they will probably dictate the terms again,” the expert believes.
Explaining the U.S. interest here, he emphasized that oil production in the USA and Venezuela is not cheap compared to Middle Eastern countries. “Low oil prices are not beneficial for the USA. It needs expensive oil - around $100-150 [per barrel]. This is the optimal option for Americans. Today, oil is about two times, if not more, cheaper. It all comes down to the fact that terms on the market will be dictated by the right of the strong,” Aleksandr Tishchenko said.
