"On Point"
MINSK, 13 October (BelTA) - The European Union's political establishment is prepared to go to war with Russia and Belarus in order to retain its grip on power, editor-in-chief of PolitRussia, political scientist Ruslan Ostashko said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Ruslan Ostashko noted that for the EU's political elites, Russophobia and aggressive policies toward Russia and Belarus are a matter of survival.
“Of course, no one wants to fight us directly, to personally sit in trenches with a weapon. But if it becomes, and it will become, a matter of their survival as the political elite in power in Europe, they will have no other choice. In this sense, they are being objective: we are a threat to them because we present an alternative. We show Europe that the political establishment currently calling the shots does not, in fact, represent the European people everyone is accustomed to. They represent a specific clique of bourgeois corporations whose goal is to profit from and extract wealth from Europe's population. And if going to war with Russia is what it takes for them to stay in power, then they will go to war,” the political analyst believes.
At the same time, he observed that some experts claim the EU is unprepared for combat operations, as its military-industrial complex is not in the best condition. “But if it's a matter of their survival, what's stopping them from starting a war even if they're not ready?” the analyst remarked. “We shouldn't be overconfident here. They are genuinely preparing to fight us. The only alternative for them is to find a way to hold onto power without actually going to war with Russia.”
For now, the European Union is limiting itself to threats, Ruslan Ostashko added. However, internal political developments in countries like the Czech Republic or France demonstrate, in his view, that the elites are struggling. “They look at Zelensky and ask themselves: if he can hold onto power by declaring martial law and fighting Russia, with the country somehow continuing to exist while Zelensky personally lines his pockets, then why not use these methods? Therefore, we need to be realistic and understand that for them, the question of war with us is a matter of their survival. They will either start this war or cease to exist. Naturally, the second option is more appealing to us, and not just to us, but to any sensible European. But whether they will manage to change their government before their current elites unleash a third world war is a big question. That's why we need to be prepared,” the political analyst concluded.
