Expert: Early voting shows that elections matter for Belarusians

MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) - Early voting has shown that the elections are important for Belarusians, Vadim Mikhailovsky, head of the BSU Department of Public Administration told the media on 25 February, BelTA has learned.

“High early voter turnout both at the ongoing and the previous campaigns show that the elections matter for Belarusians. Such practice is in demand and highly popular. The figures, which we have today (over 41%), show that the Belarusian legislation is focused on the real needs of the population and takes into account the factors that can objectively prevent Belarusians from not coming to the polling station on a single voting day,” Vadim Mikhailovsky said. “On the other hand, a lot of work has been done by both government agencies and the academic community. The Belarusian State University alone hosted more than 200 events, involving more than 20,000 people.”

According to him, such live communication proves highly efficient. “It is directed aimed at the person. People ask questions, get answers, and the result is high turnout,” the head of the department.

“The single voting day is the mainstream of today. First, this saves budget money, which was transferred to education, healthcare, transportation and security. Second, voters save time – now it is possible to express your opinion on the formation of the legislative branch of government with one visit to the polling station. Third, political parties, labor collectives and public organizations have become more active, because now they have only one chance to nominate their best people and run for seats in parliament and local councils,” Vadim Mikhailovsky said.
