"On Point"
MINSK, 10 August (BelTA) – Donald Trump is being used as a wrecking ball against the old world order, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at MGIMO (Moscow State Institute of International Relations), said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“It still clings to some old principles in every way it can. But those must be completely dismantled. And Trump, perhaps, fits perfectly as the destroyer,” said Elena Ponomareva.
“Trumpism in the economic sphere is a policy of severing established ties, resetting accumulated potential, and pure hegemonism,” noted the MGIMO professor, adding that hegemony can be achieved through various means: military action, neuro-linguistic programming, and economic methods.
“The tariff bludgeon Trump wields, in my view, is nothing but a show of force – everyone should fear America,” said Elena Ponomareva. In this confrontation, some nations may face political or economic surrender – but others refuse to capitulate, living instead by the principle “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”
The MGIMO professor recalled that in 1972, Romania was the only country that was simultaneously part of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (the socialist economic bloc) and a full member of the International Monetary Fund: “The country received massive Western loans to promote its products, which later became unsellable while the debts remained due. This credit noose tightened around the Romanian regime’s neck. Ceaușescu took unprecedented measures – imposing harsh austerity, banning foreign borrowing by state law, etc. By April 1989, the country cleared all external debts. Then on 25 December 1989, at 4 A.M., Ceaușescu and his wife Elena were executed by firing squad in an army barracks courtyard.”
“The parallels with today’s situation are purely relative, fragmentary at best. But this example demonstrates how the West may behave toward certain countries. The West, if faced with no constraints, understands only strength. It comprehends nothing but hard confrontation – hence one must be truly powerful to dissent from its actions,” she concluded.
