Expert: Belarus has a powerful MLRS fist that can hit armored vehicles, too

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Belarus has a powerful fist in the form of multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) that can hit armored vehicles, too. The independent military expert Aleksandr Alesin shared the opinion in BelTA’s YouTube project V Teme [On Point].
Aleksandr Alesin said: “I have to say that Belarus has inherited a great deal of military hardware. We’ve modernized this inventory. We know the BelGrad systems, which are based on the new MAZ 6317 chassis. The chassis can carry not only launching racks but also the munition package, which makes missile transporter-loaders no longer necessary.”

The military analyst pointed out that the approach had eliminated a number of shortcomings: “We know that a missile transporter-loader exposes the launch site. Apart from that, more vehicles need more fuel and lubricants. Respectively they need more fuel tankers. And we get an entire trail of vehicles.” Aleksandr Alesin also added that the transition to the MAZ chassis not only saves resources but also improves the concealment of launch vehicles.

“We have also developed the MLRS Uragan on the basis of the same MAZ 6317 chassis. In this manner we’ve got rid of the old ZIL 135 that had two gasoline engines and crazy fuel consumption. And now these launch vehicles have been given a second lease on life,” the military analyst underlined.

Aleksandr Alesin also mentioned the upgraded MLRS Smerch, which now boasts an automated control system with drastic improvements in fire precision.

“In other words, Belarus has a powerful fist in the form of multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) that can fire not only high-explosive fragmentation warheads but also warheads capable of destroying armored vehicles. These munitions release projectiles that fly down on parachutes in order to hit the least protected upper side of armored vehicles. Multiple-launch rocket systems can also be used to place mines remotely,” the military analyst concluded.
