BREST, 15 September (BelTA) - 17 September bears a great meaning for the further construction of the Belarusian statehood, BelTA learned from First Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of Brest Oblast Organization of the Belarusian Society Znanie, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Belarusian History and Political Science of Pushkin Brest State University Viktoriya Sushko.
“The events that took place on 17 September 1939 are, of course, one of the most important milestones in the history of Belarus’ development. It was an act of restoring historical justice, when in 1921, under the terms of the Treaty of Riga, the territory of Western Belarus was included in the interwar Poland. 17 September, both from today’s perspective and its historical significance, has a huge meaning for the further construction of the Belarusian statehood. Because the Belarusian people got the right and opportunity to live, develop and build the future on their land, in their unity,” the candidate of historical sciences emphasized.
According to Viktoriya Sushko, 17 September has become a symbol of unity of the Belarusian people in general: in its destiny, traditions, cultural and historical heritage. “The Day of People’s Unity has an important and deep meaning. It is especially true today when, unfortunately, many transformation processes that are taking place in modern society are quite complicated and sometimes extremely subjective. They often bring a certain kind of negativity. It is necessary to maintain an objective approach, to emphasize the significance of our historical past, to be proud of it,” the expert said.
The Day of People's Unity is still quite a young holiday. Belarusians have warmly accepted and loved it. “There is high interest in this date, in its significance and in the symbol of unification at all levels of society. The Belarusian land has experienced many things during the historical path to its statehood. There are heroic and tragic pages. Like no one else, Belarusians value peace and tranquility. We are able to show empathy for others. The Day of People’s Unity is outstanding evidence of this,” Viktoriya Sushko said.
