MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) - Belarus has taken all necessary measures to ensure a high level of safety at the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz said at a meeting of the Council on Sustainable Development to mark to the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day at the National Health and Safety Center of the Emergencies Ministry in Minsk on 24 April, BelTA has learned.
“The commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has played a crucial role in strengthening the energy sovereignty of our country. Following the Chernobyl NPP accident, it was not believed that Belarus would be able to realize such a project on its territory. The population of our country was quite apprehensive about the realization of this project. At the same time, we managed to implement this project, and the latest polls have showed that 77% of the population is positive about the fact that Belarus has such a reliable and modern source of energy today,” Denis Moroz said. “When building the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the builders and our cooperation with Rosatom State Corporation took into account the events that happened at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to prevent such a thing in the future. The head of state has set a clear task that the Belarusian nuclear power plant should become the most reliable in the world.”

Taking into account the tragedy at the Chernobyl NPP, Belarus has taken all necessary measures to ensure a high level of safety at the plant, the minister said. “Over the years of implementation of the national nuclear power program, major steps have been made towards the development of the nuclear and radiation safety system and its most important elements, including an appropriate regulatory and legal framework, the protection and response system, personnel training, interaction on a systematic basis with leading international organizations. Close cooperation with the IAEA was carried out as part of the construction of the nuclear power plant. More than 10 missions of this organization have inspected the plant. All of them produced positive assessment of Belarus as a newcomer country in the implementation of nuclear projects,” Denis Moroz emphasized.
