Elections in Belarus recognized as open, democratic and legitimate

MOSCOW, 26 February (BelTA) - Observers from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia recognized the elections in Belarus as open, democratic and legitimate, BelTA learned from the PA press service.

"The observers of the Parliamentary Assembly took note of the voter turnout, the high level of organization of the voting process. They also stated that all the necessary conditions for fair and open elections were created in the Republic of Belarus. According to the PA observers, the voting process complied with the legislation of the Republic of Belarus, the elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the eighth convocation were open, democratic and legitimate," the Parliamentary Assembly said.

The PA delegation, which was part of the CIS observation mission, was led by Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Budget, Taxes and Financial Market Viktor Seliverstov. The delegation carried out long-term and short-term observation and visited polling stations in the city of Minsk, Brest Oblast, Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast. Acting as international observers, the MPs attended the opening and closing of polling stations, met with the chairmen of district election commissions, international and national observers, and with the heads of the oblast councils of deputies and executive committees. 

On the eve of the voting day, representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly held a meeting with the chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus. Members of the delegation also visited the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Minsk and met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Boris Gryzlov.
