Eismont: Belarus is ready to engage in negotiations to normalize relations with any country

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) - Belarus is prepared to engage in negotiations to normalize relations with any country, press secretary of the Belarusian president Natalya Eismont told RIA Novosti, BelTA has learned.

“We are ready and we are open to negotiations with any country to discuss the normalization of relations and resolving all difficult situations. In this case, the ball is in our neighbors' court,” Natalya Eismont said when asked about the feasibility of organizing the negotiations to reopen border checkpoints currently closed not only with Lithuania but also with Poland and Latvia.

Addressing the upcoming negotiations with Lithuania on normalizing the border situation and restoring the full operation of checkpoints along the shared border, she noted that “both the format and their content are determined by the two sides”. “I believe they will be determined. We are prepared for anything,” the press secretary emphasized.

“As for Russia in this context, let me remind you that we are two countries within the Union State. I must note that we are closely monitoring the transit of Russian cargo to Kaliningrad – everything is under control,” Natalya Eismont stated. “Everyone has heard the threats, and the president responded as Russia would, but even more decisively. And for now, the cargo is moving.”

As BelTA previously reported, following a proposal from the Lithuanian authorities to resolve the situation at the Belarus-Lithuania border, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko heard reports from Chairman of the State Border Committee Konstantin Molostov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov, and Chairman of the State Security Committee Ivan Tertel. Taking into account Lithuania’s proposals, the president instructed Maxim Ryzhenkov to organize negotiations to normalize the situation and restore the full functioning of border checkpoints, with the participation of Lithuanian officials responsible for this area. Interagency coordination and additional support for the negotiations were assigned to State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich.
