MINSK, 12 July (BelTA) – The visit to Minsk and the meeting with the head of state are important for the restoration of the strategic dialogue between Moldova and Belarus, Moldovan politician and ex-president Igor Dodon, who currently holds the post of Chairman of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), told the media following the meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk on 12 July, BelTA learned.
“Unfortunately, the past four years have been one of the most difficult periods in our bilateral relations. Not through the fault of the Belarusian side. It is through the fault of the current Moldovan authorities, who decided not to engage in any talks, negotiations with Russia and Belarus,” the politician said, stressing that he considers such decision wrong. According to him, the majority of Moldovan citizens are in favor of maintaining and developing relations with such a traditionally friendly country as Belarus. “We want to be friends with Belarus, Belarusians are our brothers,” he said.

Igor Dodon considers his visit to Minsk very important for the future of bilateral interstate relations between Moldova and Belarus. “The meeting with Aleksandr Grigorievich is important from the point of view of restoring our strategic dialogue,” he said.

He expects that in the near future it will be possible to reverse the negative trends (especially in mutual trade) and restore relations, including economic ones, and bring trade to at least the previous level, as Moldova holds the parliamentary elections in September.
