Deer reintroduction plans for Belarus' Shumilino District announced

VITEBSK, 17 November (BelTA) – Some 50 red deer will be reintroduced in the forests of Shumilino District in spring, BelTA learned from the Vitebsk State Production Forestry Association.

The animals, including 19 females, 4 males and 23 young, have been delivered to the Shumilino forestry. Its area is 13 hectares which feature a full-flowing stream and woodlands. There are salt licks and feeding grounds for the animals. The animals will spend winter months here to adapt to the new habitat. They will be released in spring. The radius of the animals settlement will be some two or three kilometers.

The animals were supplied by the Obsterno farm from Miory District. The farm specializes in deer breeding and sale. This year the farm plans to deliver the same number of red deer to Polotsk.

Belarus has been implementing the five-year program Belarusian Forest since 2016. Over the past four years, 217 red deer have been purchased and brought to Vitebsk Oblast. They have inhabited the forests in Myory, Sharkovshchina, Glubokoye and Lepel districts. The population of this species in Vitebsk Oblast is about 5,000 animals.
