MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – The authority and strength of the IAEA lie in the non-politicized nature of the Agency's mandate and strict compliance with it,  head of the Belarusian delegation at the 68th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the International Organizations in Vienna Andrei Dapkiunas said as he spoke at the general discussion of the conference on 18 September, BelTA has learned.

Belarus’ delegation expressed gratitude to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi for an excellent review of the Agency's work and for his active personal efforts to promote nuclear energy as a safe, sustainable and reliable source of energy.

“In our opinion, the recognition of the contribution of nuclear energy and non-energy use of nuclear technologies to the sustainable development of countries is one of the things that proves the significance of the agency's work. Indeed, 10% of electricity in the world is generated by nuclear energy and for the third year in a row the agency has been revising upward its forecasts for the nuclear energy growth potential,” Andrei Dapkiunas emphasized.

He went on saying: “In the context of the outcomes of the international conference on nuclear security in May 2024, we support the Agency's central role in coordinating international cooperation in the field of nuclear security.”
