CSTO welcomes dialogue between Russia, US, cautiously optimistic

MOSCOW, 19 May (BelTA) – The dialogue between Moscow and Washington inspires cautious optimism, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Imangali Tasmagambetov said at a meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Bishkek on 19 May.

Imangali Tasmagambetov drew attention to the key developments in international relations and briefed the participants of the meeting about the situation in the regions directly adjacent to the CSTO zone of responsibility. "Russia and the United States have started a political and diplomatic dialogue, which inspires cautious optimism. The very fact that Russian and US officials remain in contact is important for ‘normalizing the military and political situation in the world’,” the CSTO chief noted. He expressed confidence that the dialogue between Moscow and Washington "will have a tangible impact on global processes and will help reduce tension in various regions of Eurasia, including the CSTO’s area of responsibility.”

"Second. There are advances, according to experts, on the Iranian case. Indirect talks between the US and Iran are taking place in Oman. Third. There are some preconditions for stabilization of the situation on the Korean peninsula, contributing to the stability of the entire Northeast Asia. At the same time, sharp escalation in relations between India and Pakistan, which has led to serious armed clashes, is a cause for concern. Despite the recent reduction in the intensity of the confrontation, the risks of the conflict moving into a hot phase still remain in place. We are convinced that both parties to the conflict and the international community should use all available opportunities to de-escalate the armed confrontation and find peaceful ways out of the current situation," Imangali Tasmagambetov continued.

He also highlighted the most important positive developments in the Central Asian region (as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed the agreement on the state border). There are also certain positive developments in the Caucasus (the statement on conclusion of the negotiations on the text of the draft Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia).“We hope that the document will be signed as soon as possible and expect that its implementation will pave a reliable path to peace and stability in the South Caucasus,” Imangali Tasmagambetov emphasized.
