ASTANA, 28 November (BelTA) - The leaders of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have confirmed their readiness to act together to prevent challenges and threats to collective security, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the CSTO Collective Security Council session in Astana on 28 November, BelTA has learned.
The head of state emphasized that the CSTO now acts as an effective, much-needed international structure aimed at ensuring collective security. Over the years of its development, the member states have accumulated rich experience of cooperation on a wide range of issues, formed an extensive legal framework, established the necessary mechanisms to combat modern challenges and threats, developed the forces and means of collective security, built constructive cooperation with a number of authoritative international and regional organizations.
According to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, ahead of the session the leaders of the countries held a one-on-one meeting, where they had a thorough exchange of views on topical issues of international and regional security. “The results of the meeting once again confirmed our firm readiness to act together to prevent challenges and threats to collective security,” he said.
The president added that in the course of the discussion the leaders of the CSTO states reconciled their positions on current issues on the international agenda.
Their common assessments of the current situation and their vision for the further development of the CSTO are reflected in the declaration of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
Special attention was paid to the celebration of the landmark event - the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. “The heroism of veterans, the labor feat of home front workers will forever remain in our memory. They are an inexhaustible source of immense pride and respect for all of us. On the eve of the remarkable date, we consider it important to adopt a statement of the CSTO Collective Security Council, as well as to approve the plan of events to celebrate the anniversary,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized.
The summit agenda also included two protocols to international agreements - on the status of CSTO forces and means and transportation of military contingents. The president emphasized that work had been continuing throughout the year to improve the skills and readiness of the peacekeeping contingents of the CSTO countries. Special attention was paid during the year to countering current challenges and threats - various stages of special operations were conducted simultaneously, which were aimed at preventing threats related to international terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal migration and challenges in the information environment.
The CSTO target interstate program on strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border, which has been under development since 2013, has been finalized. This document, aimed at strengthening the CSTO's southern borders, has been prepared for signing at the current summit.
