CSTO chief names factors affecting situation in CSTO’s zone of responsibility

MOSCOW, 7 February (BelTA) - CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov named major factors affecting the international situation in the regions directly adjacent to the organization's area of responsibility as he addressed a meeting of chairmen of committees (commissions) of parliaments of the CSTO member states that oversee international relations, defense and security in Moscow on 7 February, BelTA learned from the CSTO press service.

The first factor, according to Imangali Tasmagambetov, is the military presence of NATO in the western and north-western directions, the high intensity of the ongoing exercises near the borders with Belarus and Russia. "Second is the further aggravation of the situation in Eastern Europe against the background of NATO expansion, continued build-up of the alliance's armed forces on the borders of the Union State of Belarus and Russia and continued pumping weapons and provision of military and other support to Ukraine," he said.

According to him, the third factor is the growing tension in the Middle East, where the interests of Türkiye, Iran, Israel and the United States collide. The fourth is the continuing danger of the spread of terrorism, radical ideology and drug trafficking in the Central Asian region, despite the known positive changes in Afghanistan.

The next factor affecting the situation in the regions directly adjacent to the CSTO zone of responsibility is the emergence of new points of tension. "Challenges and threats of a hybrid nature are of particular concern. I am referring to the vicious practice of increasing sanctions against incompliant states instead of political dialog, and also the waging of aggressive information campaigns against opponents," Imangali Tasmagambetov noted.

"Sixth, fundamental international developments are accompanied by growing powerful positive factors. Among them is the growing consolidation of the countries of the Global South, which may indicate the gradual formation of a balanced polycentric world order," he added.

"In the emerging conditions, the CSTO continues to play a role of an important factor in ensuring stability and predictability in Eurasia. The mission of the Organization is to become one of the pillars of the new continental security architecture, which will align the integration projects and harmonize relations between the development centers in Eurasia. I can assure that the CSTO Secretariat is making maximum efforts to strengthen the political authority of the CSTO and to defend the collective interests of the states for their progressive military-political and economic development for the benefit of our peoples. We are building this work on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of the situation and building the capacity for strategic forecasting," Imangali Tasmagambetov emphasized.
