MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – In the Year of Hospitality Belarus needs to promote cultural tourism and consider creating new local landmarks, deputy head of the main ideology department-head of the social and cultural policy department of the Belarus President Administration Irina Driga said at a final session of the Culture Ministry of Belarus on 7 February, BelTA has learnt.
In 2014 cultural tourism should not be centered only upon restored monuments and castles. New local landmarks perpetuating local myths and legends should be created, Irina Driga said. She illustrated her point by mentioning the Juliet Balcony in Verona. “There was no Juliet there and there is a kitchen behind this balcony, however, there is an interesting legend behind it that appeals to tourists,” she said.
Speaking about the national culture, Irina Drigan noted that culture should not be understood narrowly, because it is not only about authentic things and folklore.
Cultural traditions of all ethnic and religious groups should be promoted and celebrated. “Monuments, places of interest, customs, both ancient and revived ones, should serve the purpose. Therefore, besides restoring the castle in Bykhov, we need to create the associated infrastructure, public catering facilities, gift shops and offer entertainment programs,” the official said.
Speaking about souvenirs, Irina Driga deems it necessary to promote both ancient and modern arts and crafts.
