GOMEL, 17 January (BelTA) - Everything is being done in the Republic of Belarus to secure strict compliance with the law, to ensure security and respect for the rights of citizens to freely express their will, Yevgeny Klemez, observer of the Commonwealth of Independent States at the presidential election, told the media, BelTA learned.
CIS observers met with members of the Gomel Regional Commission for the Election of the President of the Republic of Belarus.
The CIS observation mission has been working in the Republic of Belarus since 18 December. “We are working here on the basis of an invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and we were accredited with the Central Election Commission. During this time we have participated in almost all stages of the election process: we have observed the registration of presidential candidates, the formation of precinct commissions, met with candidates. I, for example, met with two candidates,” Yevgeny Klemez noted.
According to the CIS observer, in general the assessments are positive at the moment. “We have formed the situations center that collects all the information, analyzes it and prepares findings on the election results,” he said.
Yevgeny Klemez also emphasized that the presidential election in Belarus is taking place in the context of a rather complicated international situation. “We are closely monitoring the media, social networks, statements of the authorities. At the moment we see that everything is being done in the Republic of Belarus in strict compliance with the law. Security and respect for the rights of citizens to freely express their will are ensured,” he concluded.
Chairman of the regional election commission Piotr Kirichenko emphasized that 925 polling stations have been set up in Gomel Oblast. This is the largest among the regions. “In Gomel Oblast everything is done strictly in compliance with the Electoral Code. Things are calm and constructive. The campaigning stage began on 1 January; meetings with candidates and their proxies are held. Everyone is in equal conditions,” he emphasized.
On 17 January the CIS observers are set to visit the Dobrush District Election Commission and two polling stations. The mission's working day will continue in Vetka.
