MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – The Belarusian president grants individual pardon decisions in exceptional cases, Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration Olga Chupris told journalists while commenting on a new signed decree on pardon, BelTA has learned.
The head of state signed a decree pardoning Natalya Levaya, who had been convicted of crimes of the extremist variety.
Olga Chupris explained that the crimes were related to financing the activities of extremist groups, some of which fall into the category of armed ones. “Natalya submitted a pardon petition to the head of state, expressing sincere remorse for her crimes and asking for clemency – release from further imprisonment, as she is now pregnant and soon expecting a long-awaited baby,” Olga Chupris, who also heads the Pardon Commission under the Belarus President, said.
According to Olga Chupris, in her pardon petition Natalya Levaya outlined her vision of her future stay in Belarus, indicating that she “wants to live and raise her future child in our beautiful, peaceful, prosperous country.” The woman also stated that she is ready to lead a law-abiding life.
The corresponding petition with the necessary package of documents was immediately sent to the head of state.
“Despite the fact that the crime committed by the convict falls into the category of grave crimes, and the convict has served less than half of the prescribed sentence, the head of state made a positive decision,” the deputy head of the Belarus President Administration noted.
The woman was pardoned under the condition of law-abiding behavior. This means that any future criminal offense would result in her return to prison.
“The head of state’s action demonstrates his mercy toward both the convicted woman and her family. Every petition submitted to the president is reviewed thoroughly and with particular attention,” Olga Chupris emphasized.
