Chupris: Belarus, EU should jointly help migrants stuck on border

MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – Belarus and the European Union should jointly help migrants stranded on the border, Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration Olga Chupris told the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The leaders of the neighboring states (Poland, Lithuania), as well as other EU countries, need to embark on a dialogue with the leadership of the Republic of Belarus to prevent the further escalation of the situation and a possibility of human casualties (we already see such examples), to keep families with children away from further risks and to solve other related issues that we may not even know about. In other words, we need to chart a road map to jointly help these people,” Olga Chupris believes.

In her opinion, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the UN Commissioner for Human Rights should also get involved to help resolve this problem.

At the same time, the deputy head of the Belarus President Administration deems it necessary to give a legal assessment of the actions of the European side and, in particular, of the Polish border guards. “It is necessary to analyze whether their actions violate general human rights (and there are a whole range of them), the rights of vulnerable people (refugees, displaced persons, women and children). Finally, it is necessary to assess whether the actions of the Polish border guards in relation to these persons constitute criminal offenses, that is to give a legal assessment of their actions,” Olga Chupris is convinced.
