MOSCOW, 26 September (BelTA) – The changes in the Russian nuclear doctrine announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday is a powerful warning to the enemies of the Union State, State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Dmitry Mezentsev said on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week in Moscow on 26 September, BelTA learned.
In the run-up to the meeting of the Russian Security Council on nuclear deterrence, Vladimir Putin said that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in the event of aggression against Belarus. "We reserve the right to use nuclear weapons in case of aggression against Russia and Belarus as a member of the Union State. All these issues have been agreed upon with the Belarusian side and the president of Belarus. Including the case when the enemy, using conventional weapons, creates a critical threat to our sovereignty,” the Russian president said.
Dmitry Mezentsev described the statement as a landmark. "It is important that Russia sees the defense of the Union State as the absolutely priority. Certainly, the West is studying it. This is a powerful warning to our enemies who have put unprecedented, unjustified, illegal pressure on Russia and Belarus. We also understand that Russia and Belarus must ensure their security, taking into account the changes of the situation and threats in Europe and relying on the system of their relations which the countries have forged over the years," he said.
"I am convinced that our enemies will take heed. The West will have to take this into account as it implements its unscrupulous pressure policy against Russia and Belarus," Dmitry Mezentsev emphasized.
