Centenary of Belarusian State University added to UNESCO anniversaries list

MINSK, 9 March (BelTA) - The centenary of the Belarusian State University (BSU) has been included in the UNESCO anniversaries list. The university will mark its big day on 30 October 2021, BelTA has learned from the press service of the university.

The decision was taken at the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference. The 2020-2021 anniversaries list includes a total of 59 most important events from around the world. The list also features the 150th anniversary of the birth of artist Ferdynand Ruszczyc.

“Adding the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian State University into the UNESCO list of anniversaries gives this event an international status, confirms the significant contribution of the Belarusian university to international education and science. The event itself reflects the ideals and values of mankind, its cultural diversity. Now the university officially has the right to use the organization's logo on printed and visual products celebrating its 100th anniversary,” the press service said.

In the history of UNESCO-backed events, it was only BSU among Belarusian institutions of higher learning that had been included in this list at different times. Among them was the 90th anniversary of the birth of prominent historians Nikolai Nikolsky and Vladimir Pertsev in 1967, and the 50th anniversary of BSU in 1971.

The university actively cooperates with UNESCO via the departments on science education at the Faculty of Chemistry and the Radiation and Environmental Management Department at the International Sakharov Environmental Institute of the Belarusian State University.

UNESCO has been helping to celebrate the anniversaries and significant dates in science, culture and education of the UN member states since 1956 in order to give these events international significance. Over the time, more than 800 commemorative events have been held with UNESCO's information, organizational or financial assistance. All of them address issues related to the preservation, study and development of historical, cultural, literary and natural heritage. With UNESCO's support, Belarus has celebrated anniversaries of outstanding personalities and various events of international or regional significance - more than 60 events in total. They included the 40th anniversary of the Yakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theater, the 1150th anniversary of Polotsk, and the 450th anniversary of Belarusian book printing.
