MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) - Early voting is not our electoral legislation know-how, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said in an interview to the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.
“People ask us why we started early voting five days before the election day. So, why does the United States start early voting in some states 50 days before elections? For some reason, it is considered okay. By the way, the experts who have been in Belarus (for example, yesterday I had a conversation with the chairman of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) think that this topic is very interesting. We discussed this matter with Kenyans and the Pan-African Parliament. They explained that they do not have enough time to provide everyone with an opportunity to vote in one day. But the system of early voting expands the opportunities for citizens to cast their ballots," Igor Karpenko said.
"So do not blame us for early voting. This system is actively used all over the world. This is not our know-how of electoral legislation. We study everyone's experience, analyze it and certainly implement it in our legislation," the CEC head summarized.
