CEC chief: Best representatives of Belarus' regions got into Council of the Republic

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) – Members of the Council of the Republic are the best representatives of their regions. These are experienced people who know how to solve problems, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Igor Karpenko said at the first meeting of the first session of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus of the eighth convocation, BelTA has learned. 

“The elections of members of the Council of the Republic were held on 4 April 2024. In accordance with Article 91 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, local councils of deputies of all the regions and the city of Minsk elected eight members each. On 9 April the Central Election Commission certified the results of the elections to Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus of the eighth convocation. The head of state appointed three members of the Council of the Republic. Thus, the Council of the Republic has 59 members. Continuity was ensured, as 16 members of the Council of the Republic worked in previous convocations,” said Igor Karpenko.

“Members of the Council of the Republic are usually the best representatives of their regions. These are experienced people who know how to solve problems,” emphasized the head of the Central Election Commission. There are 18 women and 41 men among them. “Thirty-four of them have state awards, eight have an academic degree, an academic title. Five members of the Council of the Republic are chairs of local councils of deputies, eight are representatives of the executive power. There are six heads of healthcare facilities and five heads of educational institutions, 13 heads of industry and transport organizations. Such fields as culture, banking and mass media are represented by two people each. The agro-industrial complex has four representatives, the Emergencies Ministry has one representative; public associations have two representatives; there are two professional military officers. Seventeen people are members of political parties,” noted Igor Karpenko.

“On behalf of the Central Election Commission let me congratulate the members of the Council of the Republic on their election and appointment, wish them successful and fruitful work in the interests of Belarusian people,” added the head of the Central Election Commission. “I am confident that your personal and professional experience, sincere desire to be useful to your native land will help your efforts to strengthen the independence and sovereignty of Belarus, maintain its dynamic socio-economic development, ensure the rights and freedoms of citizens,” the CEC chief said.
