CEC chief: Belarusian parliament’s formation is on the home stretch

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) - The formation of the Belarusian parliament in accordance with the updated Constitution of the country is almost complete,  Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said at a meeting of the CEC on 9 April, BelTA has learned.

“Today we are set to establish the results of the elections to the Council of the Republic, which took place in all the country’s regions and Minsk. In fact, today's meeting completes the process of formation of the Belarusian parliament in accordance with the updated Constitution of the country, adopted at the national referendum in February 2022,” Igor Karpenko said.



The elections to the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the eighth convocation were scheduled for 4 April 2024 by the head of state, the CEC head said. “Sessions of local councils of deputies of the basic territorial level of each region and Minsk City Council of Deputies were held across the country on that day,” he emphasized. “Those meetings were attended by members of the Central Election Commission. According to the procedure of the relevant sessions, established by the Election Code of the Republic of Belarus, they heard the conclusions of the Central Election Commission on the compliance of the nomination of candidates with the requirements of the law and the CEC's report on the registration of candidates. The mentioned conclusions were approved by the Central Election Commission at the session of 28 March, the announcement about the registration of candidates was published in the press and posted on the CEC website.”
